A woman has been arrested for allegedly conning Nairobians by claiming she could take them abroad to work and study.

Pauline Elizabeth Njeri, 58, according to police, has been on the run since 2012.

The accused has allegedly been collecting money from unsuspecting Nairobians and regularly moving houses.

She has allegedly collected more than Sh5 million from 12 Nairobians between July 12, 2013 and November 9, 2014.

According to police, Njeri used different aliases while living in different estates, at times posing as a special agent from the Middle East.

The court also heard that she at times claimed to be a senior employee at the Canadian embassy in Gigiri.

In one instance, it is reported that Njeri conned Mary Nyambura Sh260,000 after convincing her that she was in a position to assist her son travel to Canada to work as senior manager’s cook.

One of the complainants told police she had gone to an office in South B where Njeri claimed to be a senior agent from Qatar.

On seeing the complainant’s CV, Njeri allegedly told her the right country to visit was Canada, and asked for Sh800,000. She reportedly went missing as soon as the money was paid into her account in 2012.

Some of the complainants claimed Njeri would give excuses, sometimes saying the plane had developed mechanical problems whenever she was cornered.

Njeri denied the charges and was released on a Sh400,000 bail or surety bond of Sh4 million.

The trial begins on March 3.
