Death hurts us too as mothers, sex workers say

City News

Nairobi’s sex workers now claim women lobby groups are avoiding them because of the nature of their trade.

This comes after a sex worker was killed by police on September 2 in Kayole.

They are furious over the silence of lobby groups following the murder.

Bar Hostess Empowerment and Support Programme (BHESP) executive director Peninah Mwangi claims lack of support has made them prone to police harassment.

“It is sad that women movements don’t want to associate with sex workers. They forget that they too are mothers trying to earn a living. But when other women are assaulted, these lobbyists make lots of noise,” Mwangi said.

She told The Nairobian that after reporting the killing to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority on September 11, they now want to ask the Kenya National Human Rights Commission to pursue the case too.

More sex workers are being harassed by police and county askaris after the County Assembly approved a motion on June 5 seeking the eviction of over 10,000 sex workers from the city centre.

According to Mwangi, police tried to cover up the murder by claiming the woman they shot was a rogue officer and not a sex worker.
