"I live for the stage" says YouTube girl

Asian Arena
Lilly Singh is an online entertainer

Lilly Singh a.k.a Superwoman is a popular online entertainer. Having rubbed shoulders with several celebrities, the YouTube sensation who comes from the Punjabi family living in Canada, takes a lot of pride in her work. Look out for her small role in the new movie Dr Cabbie.

The smart, talented and extremely hilarious beauty has also touched the hearts of many Nairobians. Today, she gets personal with Asian Arena.

Tell me a little about yourself and the characters you play.

Lilly is pretty much the same person. I'd say I am a positive unicorn who is passionate about making people laugh and smile. I live for the stage, studio and set.

What got you into making YouTube videos?

It was unplanned. Three years ago I had an idea and decided to post a video on YouTube. Then I fell in love with the whole creative process and being in charge of my own voice and content. I also did this because the South Asian female voice was missing on YouTube.

Where did you learn how to make videos?

I taught myself everything. That's why they are just average quality! I am still learning even how to use my camera.

There was a time you were depressed. How did you get through it?

That was because I ran into some major issues with a few close friends and became anti-social. I am not really sure how I got over it. I think I just woke up one morning and decided enough was enough.

You do many gigs. How do you manage?

I can do many things but my favourite is motivational speaking. I also do lots of event hosting, stand-up comedy and panels.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Anything and everything! Mostly, I am inspired by other people who are following their dream. I love to watch interviews and documentaries to gain insight into what other people are doing.

You have a very blunt demeanour for a typical Indian girl. Have you received discontent over your videos?

I think my biggest supporters and challengers are both from the Indian community. Some of them love having an outspoken female on YouTube but others think I should be more traditional. But you know what? I believe in what I am doing and that is what counts.

Have you ever faced any sort of discrimination because of your race or gender?

All the time! Have you read the YouTube comments lately? Being a South Asian female has been the biggest challenge and blessing. I have gained lots of traction but I don't want to be constantly labelled that Indian girl on YouTube.

You have recently started a travel vlog. Tell me about it.

My main channel contains videos of mildly scripted rants, skits and sketches. It is designed for people who want to know me a bit more. I also get to travel to amazing places and show people the world through my eyes. When I went to India, I saw Shah Rukh Khan‘s house.

What would you tell people aspiring to be you?

Please don't be like me but aspire to be you. Work hard and be nice to people.

What are your future plans?

This year I am planning to release my first rap mix tape.
