It took an out-of-court agreement to settle a payment dispute in one of the country's Miss Tourism pageants after details emerged that participants had been swindled by individuals in the county government.
According to one of the complainants, the county's department of Trade, Development and Regulation gave them bouncing cheques after initially refusing to pay them over trumped-up allegations of internal corruption.
"All payments were suspended just when we were to be paid in October over claims that county officials had inflated the budget of the entire process," said our source.
"We got cheques but they bounced. Some of us worked for nearly a month and this is what they decide to do?" the infuriated source went on.
The beauty pageants have been embroiled by claims of corruption, favoritism and underhand deals that go all the way to the top.
