A University of Nairobi student who was busted by Governor Alfred Mutua’s security team after he tried to solicit money from him has been freed. The 24-year-old, Alex Anyoro, who was charged at an Athi River court for attempting to con the governor of Sh50, 000 by distorting his voice to sound like singer Avril, was released after pleading guilty, as his defence asked for lenience since he is still a student and the bread winner of his family.
“I got a message from a person purporting to be Avril asking me to help fund ‘her’ upcoming album. However, I was suspicious and sought to determine the authenticity of the request,” Governor Mutua said.
Mavoko DCIO David Wangai said police officers were shocked to find in the possession of Alex Anyoro a notebook with telephone numbers of all governors, senators and other prominent personalities.
“I am extremely shocked to see young people use my name to extort money from innocent people,” Avril said.
