NAIROBI, KENYA: President Uhuru Kenyatta left the country this morning for a one day official visit to Juba, South Sudan, where he will attend an IGAD Summit.
President Kenyatta – who is the current chairman of the East African Community and the Rapporteur of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) – has continuously affirmed Kenya’s commitment to a speedy resolution to the South Sudan conflict.
Last Saturday, the President met Gen. Lazarus Sumbeiywo and Amb. Seyoum Mesfin of Ethiopia, who briefed him on the status of the South Sudan peace negotiations.
The Kenyan envoy to the South Sudan peace process and his Ethiopian counterpart assured President Kenyatta that a lot of progress has been made in the efforts to restore peace in Africa’s youngest nation.
“There is visible light at the end of the tunnel and the negotiations have entered the final stages where we hope for positive outcome,” Gen. Sumbeiywo said.
President Kenyatta commended Gen. Sumbeiywo and Amb. Mesfin for their diligence.
