Liverpool cruised to victory at the Pirelli Stadium thanks to goals from Divock Origi who scored the opening goal, Sturridge who scored two goals and Roberto Firmino.

The team’s coach Jurgen Klopp took no risks as he selected a full strength side for the EFL Cup trip to Burton, and in doing so turned the trickiest of ties into a rather more comfortable affair, thanks to first half goals from Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool's manager had promised to take Liverpool back to Wembley after the crushing penalty shoot out defeat by City in this competition there last season, and at the Pirelli Stadium, his first steps towards keeping that promise were delivered with steely-eyed intent.

With Sadio Mane thrust straight back into the side following injury and out of form Daniel Sturridge relegated to the bench, Burton never looked like forcing a repeat of their impressive draw here with Manchester United in the FA Cup under current boss Nigel Clough way back in 2006.

Burton's fate was sealed after the break as Tom Naylor cruelly turned into his own net after Emre Can's flick on from a corner, and then Daniel Sturridge turned in James Milner’s cross before adding another late on.
