Quarrelling couple drowns after slipping into open pit latrine in Kangemi, Nairobi

A domestic quarrel between a man and woman ended tragically after they slipped into an open pit latrine and drowned.

Witnesses and police said Peter Nyamache Makori, 27 and his wife Clarence Chepkurui, 24 had differed in their house before they argued and later started to chase each other.

The couple had a child  and was sleeping in their house when the drama happened at about 6 am Sunday.
A witness, Chrispinus Wafula said the husband started to chase the wife from the house to outside the compound.

“As Nyamache chased Chepkurui, she ran to where an open latrine was that has been serving as a sewage for the residents of houses here. She fell in and we suspect the husband tried to go for her leading to his death too,” said Wafula.

The pit is said to have been 12 feet when it was constructed and it had filled with human waste and other dirt by eight feet, police said.

Police said they were looking for the owner of the compound for questioning because he had left the pit uncovered.
Officials from the Nairobi City County were called to the scene and helped to retrieve the bodies and took them to the mortuary.

A crowd gathered at the scene as the bodies were being retrieved by the officials amid calls for regular inspections on homes to stop such tragedies. Wafula said the pit has been uncovered for long and tenants there knew about it.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a gang that raided a club in Karen, Nairobi and shot a patron in the buttocks before robbing others Saturday night.

The gang was armed with an AK47 rifle when they went to the club and ordered all patrons present to lie down and surrender all they had. It was in the process that one of the patrons tried to resist prompting a shooting incident. The gang escaped on foot and no arrest has been made so far. Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said efforts to trace them are ongoing.

“The victim was hit at after he tried to argue with the gunmen but he is out of danger. We always advise victims to cooperate with such gunmen for their safety,” said Koome.
