Woman in Vihiga dies after pit latrine collapses

Residents mull over the body of Janet Muhonja, who succumbed to injuries in the process of being rescued after a pit latrine collapsed at Wasambu village, Vihiga County, on May 9, 2016. Heavy rainfall in the region has made many structures vulnerable. (PHOTO: ERIC LUNGAI/ STANDARD)

A 53-year-old woman died yesterday after falling into a pit latrine. Janet Muhonja from Wasambu village was relieving herself in the morning when the latrine sank into the ground.

Neighbours said the latrine was rickety and the heavy rainfall experienced recently in the region may have made it more vulnerable.
