Revealed: Pep Guardiola will oversee radical shake-up at Man City

Pep Guardiola will oversee a radical shake-up at Manchester City this summer in the wake of their Champions League semi-final exit to Real Madrid.

City’s limp offering in the Bernabeu showed just why the squad needs an overhaul, despite the Blues having advanced further than ever since breaking into the Champions League.

Up to six players could be offloaded by City this summer, with the same number coming in, as the Blues seek to build on their progress in Europe this season and usher in a new era of success under Guardiola.

There will be some big-name casualties at City, with Yaya Toure leading the exodus, Guardiola looking to inject more youth and dynamism into a squad that looks to have run its course.

Toure’s insipid display confirmed he is no longer of value to City and will be on his way this summer, along with a host of others who will be jettisoned as part of Guardiola’s rebuild.

The spine of the team for the past few years is no longer as formidable, with the exception of goalkeeper Joe Hart and star striker Sergio Aguero, although the latter was peripheral in Madrid, as he has been for much of the Champions League campaign.

Skipper Vincent Kompany’s latest injury setback provided conclusive proof – if any were needed – that he can no longer be relied upon to lead the defence, with City ready to step up their efforts to land Everton’s John Stones this summer.

David Silva was absent at the Bernabeu, the victim of a hamstring strain, but he too has struggled to find his best form of late, his ongoing ankle issues undermining his creative guile.

Against that backdrop, City will need to strengthen significantly this summer if Guardiola is to have the personnel capable of giving the club a legitimate chance of Champions League success, the next great challenge for them after two Premier League title triumphs.

There is already rich talent and potential in City’s squad with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and teenage striker Kelechi Iheanacho, but beyond that there is a dearth of the quality required to succeed at Europe’s exalted level.

Gael Clichy, City’s first-choice left-back, was at fault for Real’s decisive goal in the Bernabeu, allowing Gareth Bale in behind him, with City hoping to land West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell as his replacement.
