Out of all the things in the world I want my children to learn to do is to pray. It is the most valuable lesson my mother taught me and that she is still teaching.
She taught me so much when I was a child and every day, as I go through the motions of motherhood and life, I keep looking back for lessons to apply in my life. Remembering the lessons my mother taught me, is like carrying an encyclopedia in my bag, one that I can simply pull out, open and flip through whenever I need to.
One thing that has been puzzling me though – how to pass the knowledge I have to my children and those around me. It's easy to believe that I have to sit my children down and have them take notes from a blackboard – just like in an ordinary classroom.
I have come to realise that no amount of instruction to my kids will work if I am constantly doing and saying the wrong thing. If I want my children to be rude, all I have to do is be rude to them. If I want my children to be kind, all I have to do is to be kind to them...and if I want my children to pray, all I have to do is pray with them.
There are so many wonderful people everywhere. Amazing souls who change lives and change situations from bad to amazing. Some may not have been raised by their biological mothers but the fact is that they were nurtured – by someone.
Some were nurtured by mothers, true, but so many others were nurtured by house helps, teachers, grandmothers, grandfathers and yes, even single fathers.
