Bomet man hacks his parents to death with axe after row

A 30-year-old man killed his parents with an axe because they planned to sell family land to finance his sister’s university education.

The killings left residents of Kuriot Village in Sotik reeling in shock.

Family sources indicated that the suspect (name withheld) was opposed to the plan to sell part of the family land to finance his 19-year-old sister’s education.

Instead, he had allegedly demanded the money that would be realised from the sale of the land so that he could buy a motor cycle to start a boda boda business.

The suspect reportedly left home in a huff on Sunday after his parents rejected his proposal and went on a drinking spree.

He returned in the evening and committed the crime.

LAND SALE

Local residents who spoke to The Standard said the infuriated suspect picked an axe and attacked his mother, bitterly complaining against the planned sale of land to educate his sister.

His 19-year-old sister did her Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education (KSCE) exams in 2015 and scored a C-plus.

Although she has not been admitted, she was planning to join Kabianga University.

“When the father tried to intervene, he was also hit on the head with the axe and he died on the spot,” said a neighbour.

Irate members of the public later turned on the man and beat him mercilessly, but he was rescued by police officers.

Another resident of the village added: “It seems the boy wanted the proceeds from the sale of land to be given to him so that he could buy a motorbike instead of paying school fees for his younger sister.

“To make his point, he went on a drinking spree so that he could come and cause chaos.”

Sotik OCPD Jonathan Ngala said the suspect is undergoing treatment at Kapkatet Hospital under tight security.

“The suspect who is in very critical condition has been admitted to Kapkatet and is under 24-hour security,” he said, adding that as soon as he is stable he will face murder charges.

Ngala said the father died on the spot but the mother was pronounced dead on arrival at Kaplong Mission Hospital.

“The old man died due to bleeding and unfortunately the mother was pronounced dead on arrival (at the hospital),” he added.

The police boss said crime officers have pitched tent at the home of the family to try and gather more information.

He asked those with more information to volunteer it to police.
