Nairobi, Kenya: A man accused of raping his patients in his unlicensed clinic has been charged afresh.

"Doctor" Mugo wa Wairimu faces new charges of rape, operating a clinic without valid licences and masquerading as a gynaecologist.

Wairimu, whose real name is James Mugo Ndichu, was charged again as sections of the law are being amended. The prosecution presented an amended charge sheet.

He was also charged with illegally administering unknown drugs, operating as a pharmacist without a licence from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and hiring an unlicensed laboratory technologist.

He denied the charges but the case did not proceed as his lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, was not in court.

Mugo asked the court for another adjournment to get the services of another lawyer.

Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo set the hearing for May 4 and 5 following Mugo's request but said he would not entertain any more adjournments.

"Let this be the last adjournment as this court will not keep on adjourning this matter owing to the public interest the matter generated," Mr Ogembo said.

Mugo was charged with 12 counts when he appeared in court in October last year following allegations that he sedated and raped his patients.

Police had earlier said the fake gynaecologist could not be charged with rape due to lack of forensic evidence and witness statements.

Mugo was arrested after a video recording claimed to be of him sedating and raping a female patient at Prestige Clinic in Githurai 44 estate, Nairobi, circulated in the media.

The controversial 'doctor', who practised at Prestige Clinic in Githurai 44, Nairobi, was arrested by police at a Limuru hotel and arraigned in court on September 11.

He was also charged with operating a laboratory without the approval of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.

Mugo was also accused of being in possession of an irradiation device without a valid licence.
