A former air traffic controller turned tea hawker, died with only Sh15 in his pocket. Now, three women are said to be eyeing a Sh10 million windfall in compensation.

David Kang’ethe, 51, who was featured in The Nairobian in October 2015,  died in his sleep in the house of his younger wife in Kayole on January 29.

Nancy Kang’ethe recalled that her husband woke up around 5am and went for a short. He went back to bed, but started snoring unusually without waking up. She reportedly rushed to call neighbours, but on returning found he was “he was already dead.”

Kang’ethe had turned to hawking tea and mandazi in Kayole after losing his job with the Directorate of Civil Aviation, then under the Ministry of Transport and Communication following an industrial strike in 2002.He had worked there since the early 1990s after graduating from the East African Aviation College. Following the sack, Kangethe resorted to hawking tea and mandazi. The Court of Appeal recently concluded the case and directed that dismissed workers be compensated for the years they have been jobless.

His younger wife, Nancy Kang’ethe, who lived with him until his death, claims some relatives are side-lining in anticipation of the compensation money.

“I lived with him since 2002 in poverty until he passed on, and none of them wanted to hear anything from him while he was alive because we lived in abject poverty.”

Jane Njeri, Kangethe’s first wife of 21 years, claims they parted ways around 2008 after Kang’ethe settled down with second wife. Njeri and Kang’ethe had six children.

“The younger wife does not deserve anything because in a way, she destroyed our family,” says Njeri, a sentiment also shared by Dennis Kang’ethe, Njeri’s first-born who argues that, “My father abandoned us to live with Nancy. We suffered a lot because I was left with the burden of taking care of my siblings. Until his death, my dad had not even seen our last born.”

Dennis adds that, “He was a close friend and updated me on everything. He had hinted to me that he was expecting around Sh10 million compensation from the aviation authority should their case successful.”

A third woman who identified herself as Njeri from Ruiru told The Nairobian that she had a baby with Kang’ethe and had a right to the man’s money

Kang’ethe’s body was taken to Kenyatta University mortuary where post-mortem results were carried out on February 1. He was hurriedly buried in his Gatundu village where the reading of his eulogy was ignored.
