Want respect? Show your mind not behind

There is a big problem with girls in our urban areas. Someone has obviously misadvised them. In today’s world the clicks on your social network page is the currency you need to be popular with your peers, or at least to appear so.

But, of course, clicks also come at a premium. Like looking for a pin in a haystack, popularity on social media does not come on a silver platter. So what do girls who want a huge following on social networks do to gain popularity?

Posing nude

They go to wild parties and pose in the most ridiculous pictures and somehow those photos find their way online. And viola... the girl becomes ‘famous’. With the bug quickly spreading fast, especially among college girls. The number of ‘ratchet’ posts online has increased tremendously.

Can you imagine stumbling on a page and you find a girl from your village, or worse still your relative posing nude? Some of the images you see make the statue outside the Supreme Court look like it is over-dressed.

It appears like there is a competition. Just the way matatus in major cities try to outdo each other with the graffiti or paintings on their body works, girls too do the same. They will go for the most daring of poses and ‘ratchet’ behaviour that sends shivers even to the veterans of K-Street.

The girls have turned themselves into nothing about merchandise by posing photos that are too revealing in nature. They may argue that they are offering men options in optical nutrition must they are wrong. When will feast their eyes on them and admire whatever they fancy in that photo, pretty similar in the same manner they would scrutinize a goat before buying it for a bash.

In a noisy world, a successful woman understands that she has to carve out some alone time for herself. But the last thing a ‘ratchet’ wants to do is be alone. She goes on the phone to gossip and discuss the latest music video and how she wishes she had featured in it.

It has not helped matters that, some radio stations will hire a radio presenter depending on the following on her social media pages. What the hiring radio station forgets is that people, often men and disgusted women, follow her online to see how low she can sink.

Grace to grass

The huge following on Twitter or thousands of comments on Facebook do not automatically translate into listeners. Of grave concern is that of a few of these girls somehow manage to ‘invest in their future from behind’ but are totally clueless on how to save up for lean times.

All they do is purchase expensive items and when they fall, they fall hard. Methinks that instead of twerking in nightclubs and bars, these young girls - most of them in college - should be flipping through books and class notes.
