Nakuru Governor face off with MP over Mungiki claims

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua

Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has challenged Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to come clean over alleged link with the outlawed Mungiki sect.

Speaking yesterday, Mr Ngunjiri said the governor’s association with some people suspected to be Mungiki members is disturbing.

“If it is true that the governor is sympathetic about the sect members who have been regrouping in town, collecting money from traders at Nasha Square under the pretext that they will offer security then he owes residents an explanation,” he said.

But the governor has denied any links with the sect and warned of legal action against those claiming he was supporting the outlawed group.

Mr Mbugua has urged security agencies to launch investigation into claims of the re-emergence of Mungiki and mysterious deaths of two businessmen who were abducted two weeks ago.

“I’m shocked to realise that there are some people who all along had known that the two traders who were murdered were members of the Mungiki sect but failed to report to authorities. Why did they keep quiet all this years. Were they accomplices? he posed

“I attended the funeral knowing the murders were mysterious and called for thorough investigations into the deaths,” he added.

The governor has been faulted for attending the burial of Joseph Chege, whose murder was linked to activities of an illegal gang that was were forcing traders to pay protection fee. During the burial, Mbugua told mourners that the deceased was a close ally who played an active role in his election campaigns.
