Matatus can have 52-inch TVs, but not ‘kinyambi’

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said it has no qualms with mathrees that have installed televisions screens.

The problem is with the content that they air. “We have no problem with televisions and other display devices installed in matatus. Our biggest worry is the kind of content being aired,” said NTSA Director General Francis Meja during a matatu crackdown in the city.

The crackdown, which began on January 25, came after a directive by NTSA demanding the removal of offensive artwork, modified horns, noisy exhaust pipes and colours that are not on the vehicles’ logbooks.

NTSA also wants all PSVs to clearly display the names of their Saccos in letters which are visible from at least 275 metres, and all tinting on windows to be removed.

Speaking to The Nairobian, NTSA Chair Lee Kinyanjui said the exercise will go on until all matatus comply.

“We will not allow graffiti to cover windscreens and windows to the extent that police cannot see the inside of matatus, neither will we allow the obscuring of Sacco details, as this amounts to putting commuters’ safety at risk,” he said.

According to the NTSA Act 2014, innovative decorations (graffiti) should not be offensive, sprayed, drawn or affixed on any window.

The regulation also demands that there should be no additional exterior or interior lighting, other than those installed by the vehicle manufacturer.
