Police inquest launched into killing of man near Mtongwe naval base

MOMBASA: No arrests have been made following Wednesday’s killing of a 27-year-old man allegedly by Kenya Navy soldiers outside Mtongwe naval base.

Police have, however, said an inquest into the killing of the man claimed to be mentally disturbed has been opened. The Navy officers are said to have shot the man.

Some rights activists say the mental health story was invented by family members under duress in order to cover up information about the victim.

Ndoro Mwembe died on the spot when a soldier allegedly shot him in the chest at 6am after he hurled stones at pupils inside a military truck.

Mombasa Deputy County Police Commander Akello Odhiambo said police were engaging the public to help unravel the killing, adding that necessary action will be taken against the officer if found culpable.

“Officers are still recording statements from the public and I want to assure the locals that action will be taken against any officer who will be found  responsible for the killing,” said Mr Odhiambo.
