Brands battle for growing share of smartphone market in Kenya

NAIROBI, KENYA: Wiko brand has launched the new Wiko slide 2 smartphone to compete in the Kenyan market.

Recent report released by e commerce site Jumia shows that the Kenyan market is saturated with smartphones as many people are upgrading from feature phones.

According to the study which was released in June, of the 3.1 million devices sold in Kenya this year, 1.8 million were smartphones, representing 58 per cent of the units sold. Key brands in the smartphone business includes Samsung, Tecno, Wiko, Infinix, Obi, Oppo, InnJoo among others.

The partnership between the two companies is the second this year with the first one having been signed in July during Jumia Mobile week megathon sale. The two companies are optimistic that this year’s Jumia Black Friday will last year’s triple sales and go on to be the biggest e-commerce sales day in the history of Kenya.

The phone features a 5.5” HD display screen, a powerful 1.4 GHz octa-core processor, 2GB RAM the Wiko slide comes in two colors blue and gold sand embellished with a metallic frame and runs on Android 5.1 lollipop operating system.
