University of Nairobi dominates 2015 Mazingira competition

NAIROBI, KENYA: University of Nairobi are the top winners of this year’s Mazingira Challenge after beating eleven other universities in the event organised by Kenya Forests Working Group.

Daystar, Technical University of Kenya, Maseno, University of Kabianga were among participating institutions in this year’s colourful event held at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Center on Friday 6.

“We are very pleased by the ideas presented by students in this year’s competition; we are looking at incubating some of them at Strathmore University’s Climate innovation center," said Naftal Nyabuto, one of the organisers.

The Center provides holistic, country-driven support to accelerate the development, deployment and transfer of locally relevant climate and clean energy technologies.

The Center provides incubation, capacity building services and financing to Kenyan entrepreneurs and new ventures that are developing innovative solutions in energy, water and agribusiness to address climate change challenges.

University of Nairobi dominated in the six categories which included innovation, quiz, public speaking, essay poetry and art work.

Since its inception in 2010, Kenya Forests Working Group (KFWG) has been organizing Mazingira Challenge in partnership with development partners and corporate institutions.

This year, the event was supported by World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) and Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). KFWG implemented the event in collaboration with Inuka Foundation for Development (IFD) and World Student Community for Sustainable Development -Kenya (WSCSD-KENYA).
