The words you use in tweets can reveal how much money you make

News

It's not just the messages, it's the words you use that offer an insight into the person behind the screen

Regular tweeters will know that their words can have an impact - whether it's positive or negative.

But they might be surprised to learn that even the individual words they're using on the social network say a lot about them.

They can even offer a hint as to their personal income to those watching closely.

The news comes from academic research carried out by Daniel Preo?iuc-Pietro , who together with a team found that income can be revealed on Twitter through actual posts.

ther information, such as the number of friendships, demographics, personality, education level or expressed emotions, are also key.

Preo?iuc-Pietro, from the Positive Psychology Centre at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, worked with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, University College London and Microsoft Research in Cambridge.

The conclusion stated: "We found that the proportion of tweets using vocabulary related to fear or joy, the ratios of tweets with links and retweets as well as topics discovered in the textual content have high predictive power.

"We also discovered that users perceived to be female, younger, African American, with lower education level, or anxious are associated with lower rates of income."

On the other hand, users with higher income post less emotional (positive and negative) but more neutral content, exhibiting more anger and fear, but less surprise, sadness and disgust," he continued.

"Finally, through an analysis on user language, we were able to highlight latent topics that discriminate users with high and low income, such as politics, specific technology topics or swear words.

They've also stated that the details could be used for future marketing, so look out if you're a prolific tweeter.
