The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) is planning to partner with North Rift counties to train medical staff and offer technical support as a way of de-congesting the second largest referral facility in the country.
Currently, MTRH is grappling with acute congestion from referrals despite having increased its bed capacity to 1,000.
MTRH Managing Director John Kibosia said the collaboration would help reduce referral cases so that MTRH can deal with complex cases the county hospitals can't handle.
Speaking Wednesday after touring Iten County Referral Hospital in Elgeyo Marakwet where the collaboration will start, Dr Kibosia said the partnership will kick off soon, adding that the facility has recorded tremendous improvement in service delivery since devolution took off.
"We want county referral hospitals to be independent and not dependent on MTRH," he said. The collaboration will entail sending bone surgeons, establishing ICUs and renal units in Iten hospital and mentoring nurses and clinical officers at MTRH.
