Nowhere to run

Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir is a man on the run. He has been running away from justice ever since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him; accusing him of mass murder and war crimes in the Darfur conflict in which the UN says 300,000 people were killed, a claim that Sudan says has been exaggerated.

While attending the African Union summit meeting in South Africa last week, a South African court issued orders restraining Mr Bashir from leaving the country. However, he escape arrest. In 2011, High Court judge Nicolas Ombija issued orders that Mr Bashir be arrested were he to set foot in Kenya, a move that precipitated a diplomatic furore.

It is not clear whether South African police would have arrested Mr Bashir, but what is not in doubt however, is that the world is squeezing the beleaguered President keen to thumb his nose at the West, into a corner. And soon, when his luck runs out, the long arm of the law will catch up with him.
