Moi university to set up campus in Bomet town

Moi University has settled on Bomet town as the place where a campus will be set up for its constituent college within the county.

This effectively puts an end to feuding that has been going on for the last one year with some leaders led by Governor Isaac Ruto pushing for Sigor in Chepalungu while various MPs rooted for Bomet town.

"The university will have its campus in Bomet town where the president issued a title deed recently and it will start admitting students in September if the Government releases resources," Vice Chancellor Prof Richard Mibei said.

Prof Mibei made the announcement yesterday after a tour of the two sites under contention accompanied by a technical team from Commission for University Education (CUE) led by its chairman Prof David Some.

Before touring the sites, the VC held a closed door meeting, for more than two hours, with governor Ruto, Senator Prof Wilfred Lesan, Woman Rep Cecilia Ngetich and Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui.

CHOSEN SITE

After the meeting, the team set out for an inspection tour of the two sites before the university's preferred site was made known to the Press.

Prof Some said CUE will release a report of its findings to the university senate for action ahead of the university's launch.

He said his team will check on the physical structures especially classrooms, library, laboratory and available parcels which have been surrendered for use as a constituent college.

A stalemate has rocked setting up of the University for the last one year and the end appeared in sight after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the county and presented title deeds for two parcels of land to regional commissioner Osman Warfa.

The visit by the teams from Moi University and the CUE has also put an end to what has been viewed as political bickering between the governor and MPs from the county who have been engaged in a war of words.

Sotik MP Joyce Laboso has been among the more vocal leaders who, together with senator Lesan, have been calling for establishment of the campus at Bomet town.

The leaders have said this location is most convenient for all residents.
