Cord leaders hold talks with us secretary of state Kerry

Leaders of the Opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) early today had “an outstanding discussion” with visiting US Secretary of State Mr John Kerry around a range of issues including national security, internal reforms, war on corruption, Somalia and regional stability, with particular focus on Burundi and South Sudan. Mr Raila Odinga led the CORD team that also included Mr Kalonzo Musyoka and Senator Moses Wetangula.

On internal reforms, the two sides agreed on the need to make the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) more efficient and credible ahead of the next elections. Both the US and Kenyan Opposition delegation were positive that the next elections need to be held under the auspices of a fundamentally reformed IEBC.

The two sides also agreed on the necessity of reforms to safeguard Devolution, Land and systems of governance with particular attention to inclusivity in government.

They also agreed on the need for a shared and understood exit strategy for the KDF from Somalia.

On Burundi and South Sudan the Kenyan and US delegation agreed on the need for Kenya to stay engaged in the search for stability in the two nations, in addition to Somalia. The US government pledged to work closely with Kenya in the search for stability in the region.
