CID officers killed in road crash while headed for Maurice Amatta burial

Three officers who were involved in a road accident along Kiambu road in Nairobi were attached to the CID headquarters .

Nairobi, Kenya: Two senior officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (CID) were Saturday morning killed and another injured in an accident along Kiambu road in Nairobi.

The three were headed for the burial of Maurice Amatta, a CID officer in charge of forensic investigations.

The accident occurred at 4.30am as the officers drove in an official car to Siaya for the burial of Amatta, who died two weeks ago.

Amatta died at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi after a short illness. He had drove himself to the hospital complaining of stomachache. The 59-year-old was one of the leading officers trained in forensic investigations and was instrumental in setting up of the forensic laboratory at CID headquarters that is under construction.

The police fraternity described Amatta as one of the best detectives the service had. He had served in various sections including the Flying Squad.

According to police, the vehicle - a Mercedes Benz in which the three officers were driving in collided head on with another car belonging to a media house employee at Kigwa area, near the Kiambu by-pass junction.

The deceased are chief inspectors attached to CID headquarters along Kiambu road, one died on the spot while the other passed on in hospital.

The injured officer and the media house employee were admitted to Gurunanak Hospital and Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi respectively.

The cause of the accident was not immediately established and police said they were investigating.

“Our officers are investigating the cause of the accident,” said Kiambu County Police Commander James Mugera.
