Ababu Namwamba sues National Assembly over Public Accounts Committee report

Nairobi, Kenya: Former Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Ababu Namwamba has sued the National Assembly and the Powers and Privileges Committee.

Namwamba, who wants the court to stop the National Assembly from implementing the report said it was used as a sacrifice to clear the name of the already tainted House.

“The Standing Order relied on by Aden Duale to initiate this process was a decoy meant to achieve a political agenda through the backdoor of the Powers and Privileges Committee,” said Namwamba in an application filed in court.

The Budalang’i MP also claimed that there were strangers in the Powers and Privileges Committee thus rendering their recommendations null and void.

In the application, Namwamba said that Speaker Justin Muturi has already admitted that Parliament has no powers to investigate theft and especially corruption.

He requested the case be certified as urgent.

The House dissolved the Public Accounts Committee and ordered it be constituted afresh. Some of its members were barred from being part of the new team.

This means that MPs Ababu Namwamba (Budalang'i), Cecily Mbarire (Runyenjes), Ahmed Abass (Ijara), James Bett (Kesses), Omondi Anyanga (Nyatike) and Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West) will be banned from PAC.

Last week, Namwamba was suspended from House sessions for four days for failure to give an apology over the graft graft claims levelled against the PAC members.

He termed the report as "a pack of contradictions’’ adding that the investigation was predetermined and dismissed the findings as those of a Kangaroo court.
