Laikipia, Nairobi: Fear of a terror attack gripped Laikipia University in Nyahururu on Tuesday night after suspected arsonists set on fire the main social hall.

Following the incident, a curfew has been put in place within the university barring any student or members of staff from any movement within the compound between 11pm to 5am.

The fire, which started at around 2am, razed down the Elimu Hall, which borders the main administration block.

According to the Vice Chancellor Prof Francis Lelo, it is suspected that the arsonists set on fire the premises for unknown reasons.

Property of unknown amount was burnt down during the incident that prompted students to scamper for safety in areas within and outside the school compound.

He said that police who visited the scene found jerricans of petrol.

"We do not know the motive behind this incident that started in the wee hours of the night. Students who have talked to us said that they heard loud bangs prompting them to run for safety," he said.

Lelo added that security personnel have been called upon to provide security.
