Speakers call for action on insecurity

Kenya: Parliament speakers Justin Muturi and Ekwe Ethuro have called on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to take action against insecurity in Turkana County.

The two speakers said the rising insecurity in the county undermines development.

Mr Muturi said it was unacceptable that lives are routinely lost to bandits. "Insecurity is a serious matter and it is unfair that people along the Turkana-Pokot border are killed every day," said Muturi, who is the National Assembly speaker.

He added: "The national government has a mandate to ensure that Kenyans are safe."

Mr Ethuro, the Senate speaker, said the insecurity must be addressed once and for all. "This issue should be handled so that we can live peacefully," he said.

The two spoke during the launch of the Turkana County Assembly Standing Orders, strategic plan and the first journal in Lodwar. Turkana South MP James Lomenen said two police reservists were killed by raiders in Kainuk and Kakong last week. "Today, another one was killed at the bridge in Kainuk," he said.
