NYERI: Catholic run St Mary Boys High School registered an impressive mean score of 9.728 beating giants Kagumo High Schools and Nyeri High School.

Kagumo, one of the schools elevated to national status in 2012, improved from a mean score of 9.467 last year to 9.598 this year. Nyeri High School managed 9.266.

"It is our best performance ever and we are much grateful," said Kagumo Deputy Principal George Njoroge.

Mr Njoroge said the school had 13 straight As, 56 A- (minus), 16 B+ (plus), 49 B (plain), 29 B- (minus), 14 C+ (plus), four C (plain) and one C- (minus).

"Of all the 228 students we entered for KCSE last year, only five failed to get minimum university entry grades and we are very much impressed," said Njoroge.

He, however, said there is room for improvement and they want to produce many more students with top grades in future.

Mahiga Girls High School in Othaya also performed well, with figures showing it had two straight As, 15 A- (minus), 50 B+ (plus), 47 B (plain), 30 B- (minus), 25 C+ (plus), seven C (plain), two C- (minus) and one D (plain).

School board chairman Wahome Gikonyo praised the former students for working hard and said they hoped to increase the number of top grades in the next exam.

Othaya Boys High School also recorded improved performance with its mean rising from 8.49 last year to 8.956 points.

STRATEGIC OPERATIONS

Principal Dedan Mureithi said the school had four straight A's, 33 A- (minus), 39 B+ (Plus), 35 B (plain), 35 B- (minus), 27 C+ (plus), eight C (plain) and three C- (minus).

"Of our 184 candidates, 173 or 94 per cent have managed to gain university minimum entry grades and we can only attribute this to hard work and strategic operations by stakeholders," said Mr Mureithi.

Murunguru Girls High School posted a mean of 7.037 beating Nyeri Baptist High School which managed 5.594.
