Suspect in MP George Muchai murder to be charged on Friday, two more held

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery

NAIROBI: One suspect is Friday morning expected to face murder charges against the killing of Kabete MP George Muchai and his three aides.

Police were Thursday holding three suspects but said they are ready to charge one as they continue interrogating the other two.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the attack was committed by a gang that had earlier on carjacked a Toyota Spacio car in Wangige area that had two women.

“So far, investigators have covered significant ground and made good progress. In this regard, one suspect will be appearing in court tomorrow to face charges related to the murder of Muchai and three others,” said Nkaissery.

Acting Inspector General of Police Samuel Arachi and Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro were present when Nkaissery made the announcement.

Muhoro said the gang used a G3 rifle to kill the four.

“We have made good progress and hope to get all required evidence to get a conviction. We are doing well,” he said.

The suspects who are all male were arrested in a police operation on Wednesday in Limuru area.

One was arrested earlier in the day while his accomplices were arrested late in the night. They were said to be “cooperating with the police well”.

Police revealed one of the gunmen was a wanted criminal and had been linked to other attacks in the area

Teams of police from Nairobi continued to comb parts of Limuru to get more information that will help them with the case.

This was after investigations indicated the gang had abandoned a car that they used in the attack in Ndeiya area four kilometres away from Kamandura where they had dropped two carjacked women who were the occupants of the vehicle.

Police are relying on various preliminary leads including results of dusted vehicle that was used in the attack and ballistic results on the bullet heads that were recovered from the scene.

Muchai, police constables Samuel Lekakeny Montata and Samuel Kimathi Kairingia  and driver Stephen Ituu Wambugu were killed by a lone gunman at the Uhuru Highway-Kenyatta Avenue Roundabout on Saturday at about 2.50 am.

A postmortem done on the bodies on Wednesday showed they died out of profuse bleeding and all had bullet wounds in the chest and heads.

They were robbed of two pistols loaded with 30 bullets and a briefcase whose contents are yet to be known.

They were in a Toyota Fortuner when a car scratched it and stopped ahead of them blocking the way before a gunman wearing a balaclava jumped out and opened fire at the car.

Police investigations show the four were killed by gunmen who had earlier on carjacked and robbed two female motorists who were driving a Toyota Spacio in Wangige area.

The gang bundled the two into the trunk of the car before they drove to several spots including a popular club in Parklands, Kikuyu Town and Waiyaki Way before they shot at the MP and his aides.

According to the women, the gang later abandoned them in Kamandura area near Limuru from where they managed to make a report at the Tigoni police station.

Their car was abandoned at Ndeiya area.

Muchai is set to be buried Friday in Kamulu home along Kangundo Road.
