A Nyeri politician yesterday recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly issuing death threats to a local MP.

Thuo Mathenge, who is the chairman of the National Alliance party (TNA) Nyeri branch, had been summoned by the County Director of CID Julius Emase.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega recorded a statement on Thursday last week, claiming he had been threatened by the politician at his cousin's burial in his constituency.

However, Mathenge yesterday vehemently denied having issued the said threats to the MP. "The MP is engaging in cheap politics to win public sympathy. However, I bear no grudge against him," he noted.

Mathenge said Kega should apologise to him unconditionally for making such wild allegations, which he said were aimed at tarnishing his name.

Speaking to the Press, Mathenge said although he plans to run for the county's gubernatorial seat in 2017, he had nothing to achieve by issuing death threats to the MP.

"We have no fight with the MP. I'm not interested in his seat," he said.

 'Harmless' SMS

He added: "The SMS I sent to him was aimed at congratulating him and cannot amount to a threat under any circumstances," he stated.

Mathenge said Kega should instead concentrate on serving Kieni people who elected him to Parliament. "I challenge the MP to invest in Kieni like I have done," he added.

Mathenge arrived at the CID headquarters at around 3pm accompanied by some of his supporters and TNA officials from Nyeri branch.

Last Thursday, the MP arrived at the CID offices in Nyeri claiming that he has been threatened by Mathenge and claiming his life is in danger.

The CID boss confirmed that the MP had recorded a statement to facilitate investigations into the death threats claims.
