MP threatens to shame legislators who misbehaved during security bill debate

National Assembly members who caused the fracas witnessed during the heated debate on the Security Bill last month risk being locked out of Parliament for two months once the House resumes its sittings in February.

Finance, Planning and Trade Committee Chairman Benjamin Lang'at said he has compiled "a list of shame" of the MPs who "misbehaved" during the stormy session and would name and seek Parliament's support to suspend them.

"Parliament demands that legislators only use their brains and debating skills and, therefore, those who dropped all the Parliamentary decorum and put the House in disrepute must be named and punished by being banished from Parliament for at least two months," he said.

Mr Lang'at told members of the Opposition that democracy allows the minority to have their say and the majority to have their way.

Speaking at Ainamoi Secondary School during the issuance of Sh16 million Uwezo Fund cheques to 56 youth and women groups yesterday, the MP said the list has names of legislators from both sides of the House and he would name them once the MPs resume sittings.

He was accompanied by MPs Joseph Limo (Kipkelion East) and Eric Keter (Belgut).

The MP asked the county governments to observe the 35 per cent requirement in awarding tenders to women, youths and people living with disabilities.

He urged the youth and women groups to take advantage of the funds to improve their standards of living and assist the Government reduce the rate of unemployment through viable enterprises.

"We would like to encourage youths and women not to fear taking up the loans being granted by the Government through the Uwezo kitty since not only is the interest rate very low, but is also the only way they can raise capital for establishing viable business enterprises," he said.
