United Nations agency churns out 500 pioneer beach operators

Kenya: Pioneer beach operators have graduated after intensive training. The move aims to equip them with skills and knowledge to conduct their businesses on the seafront, in a programme supported by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s ST-EP Foundation and the Travel Foundation. It is being implemented by the Kenya Coast Tourist Association.

Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho who officiated the event at Butterfly Pavillion, Mombasa, said the county government will support the project to train more 500 beach traders. Over 500 beach traders, mostly massage therapists, Safari and curio sellers, boat operators and general merchandisers benefited from the training.

“The project aims to help beach operators provide quality service to holidaymakers in Mombasa, earn a fair living from tourism, and forge valuable, long lasting relationship that benefits all destination stakeholders,” KCTA Chairman Mohamed Hersi said.

Tourism harassment

Hersi said the training helps in building strong work relations between beach operators and private, public and non governmental organisations. Hersi who is also the Chief Executive of Heritage Group of Hotels said tourism harassment remained a major cause for visitors dissatisfaction in Mombasa.

KCTA Executive member Khalid Shapi said beach tourism can benefit stakeholders when there is discipline and harmony for all beach users. Chairman of the North Coast Beach Management Committee Eusephio Nyasar Kanyifa said they have acquired survival skills that will empower them in their daily work.
