Kenya will have to be satisfied with hosting the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in 2018 after their bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals failed.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on its website that Kenya’s bid was among three others that did not make the cut to host the tournament after Libya pulled out.

Apart from Kenya, CAF also rejected bids from Sudan and Zimbabwe. Only four countries were shortlisted to host the event. They include Ghana, Algeria, Egypt and Gabon.

CAF revealed it had rejected the three bids including Kenya’s owing to their failure to meet stringent conditions set out.

One of them was the need to improve infrastructure and readiness to host the 16 team finals immediately.
Last week, Football Kenya Federation presented to the media its bid for the 2015 finals.

The event was attended by Sports Minister Hassan Wario who said the country was ready to host the event.

Wario said they will soon embark on construction of at least two stadia to make this a possibility.

“We have two major bids we are hoping will go through. This is part of the Jubilee manifesto and will put us in the big league with other countries.

“In this regard we are consulting with international advisers on the designs we should adopt for the stadia we want to put up. In May or June next year, it will be clear where and when we will do the construction,” he said then.

Dr Wario revealed that the first two stadia under the Jubilee manifesto will be built in Eldoret and Mombasa with government funds while private developers will be involved in the construction of the other three.

“We have already identified land on Ngong Road where we intend to construct a rugby stadium that will also be used for football,” he revealed.
