Man has new face growing on his chest after electric shock leaves him severely disfigured

Doctors have already created a basketball-sized 'head' and will look to complete the pioneering treatment within two years

Doctors are attempting to grow a new face on the chest of a man who was severely injured when he was electrocuted.

Yan Jianbin now has a basketball-sized 'head' growing on his chest and doctors will soon carve a face onto it which will be reattached to his damaged face.

The former technician lost his right eye and nose when he opened the door of a high-voltage transformer to peer inside while working in China's Hebei Province and was electrocuted.

It has been six months since the pioneering treatment began at Shenyang Amy General Hospital.

The process involves injecting saline water into Yan's chest to expand the skin and now that it has expanded enough doctors will attempt to create facial features.

They say the whole plastic surgery will be broken down into five phases and will take two years.

The first two phases involve building a new nose using part of his rib cartilage and newly-created skin.

Next, new blood vessels and arteries will be created, with the fourth phase being the face transplantation and finally fine-tuning Yan's new facial features.
