NMK permits establishment of private museums

MOMBASA, KENYA: The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has permitted the development of private museums in the country and urged county governors to sign up Memorandum of Understanding with NMK to establish their own museums.

In a telephone interview with The Standard, NMK Director General Dr Ahmed Yasin said that several governors have come forward and sought out NMK's partnership to develop capacities for both establishing museums.

''The new constitution has devolved functions of traditional museums and the county governments are best suited for this role hence we are working closely with them to offer capacity building and signing up MOU to acquaint themselves with how to manage and handle traditional museums,'' Dr Yasin said.

Dr Yasin spoke as it emerged that Enashipai Resort & Spa located in Naivasha has opened up Kenya's first private run museum , the Maa Museum showcasing authentic Maasai culture and traditions.

Established earlier this year, and presently the first and only privately registered and licensed museum in Kenya, was this little gem opened up within the grounds of the Enashipai Resort & Spa, dedicated to the Maasai people, their customs, traditions and history.
