Kiambu to host Craig Bowl Ladies golf tournament

A record big field is expected tomorrow at the Kiambu Golf Club for the annual Craig Bowl Ladies Golf Tournament.

According to the tournament organiser Grace Githere, who is also Kiambu Golf Club Lady Captain, more than 140 women have registered for what will be the biggest tournament at the Kiambu Golf Club course this year.

Among the favourites is Kenya’s number one female golfer Naomi Wafula of the Rose Naliaka Golf Academy who won at the Kiambu Ladies Open on the same course in April.

The Craig Bowl, an annual tournament played every July at the Kiambu Golf Club, is one of the biggest ladies’ tournaments in the golf calendar.

It was first played in 1935 and has always attracted ladies from clubs all over the country.

The tournament has received sponsorship from CIC Insurance Group courtesy of their CIC Lady Auto Insurance policy which targets female motorists.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, CIC General Insurance Managing Director, Kenneth Kimani, said the company is committed to promoting ladies’ golf as a sport.

“Golf as a sport is a powerful tool for promoting ladies’ development as it provides opportunities for interaction and networking,” said Kimani.

According to Grace Githere, Kiambu Golf Club will play the monthly Mug in the afternoon, which is also sponsored by the CIC Insurance Group.

Meanwhile, Kenya Ladies Golf Union will hold an Emergency General Meeting tomorrow after the tournament.

According to KLGU chair, the EGM will discuss and adopt the proposed Kenya Golf Federation constitution in addition to making amendments to the KLGU constitution.

“This will enable KLGU to comply with the Sports Act that requires the sports to have one golf federation to manage the game of golf in Kenya. Another key highlight in the KLGU constitution will be to make an amendment that will bring back the voting rights of lady captains and past lady captains,” Joyce Wafula told FeverPitch yesterday.
