IEBC chiefs to know their fate next week

The fate of a petition filed in the National Assembly to remove nine Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officers will be known next week.

The Committee for Justice and Legal Affairs is expected to table its report before the House next week making recommendations on the competence or otherwise of the petition.

The House will then debate the report and, through a vote, determine whether the process to remove the commissioners should move to the next stage.

The committee has received submissions from the commissioners and the petitioner, Wafula Buke, a CORD activist, as well as written submissions from other interested parties.

Mr Buke yesterday maintained he had enough evidence to prove the commissioners were unfit to hold office. He asked the committee to carefully consider the documents he had presented.

"What I have given the committee is what every Kenyan saw during the bungled election. It is enough and I'm confident their report will vindicate me," he said.

The commissioners appeared before the committee on Tuesday and claimed the petition was incompetent, saying they had no apologies to make regarding the outcome of the March 2013 presidential poll.

They accused Buke of being on a "fishing expedition" and claimed his petition was designed to subvert the will of the people.
