JSC appoints Kandet new Registrar of Industrial Court

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Judicial Service Commission has appointed Kennedy Kandet as Registrar of the Industrial Court, with effect from June 3, 2014.

Registrars are the administrative leaders of the various courts responsible for facilitating access to justice through record keeping and day-to-day management.

Kandet joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a District Magistrate and rose through the ranks to the position of Principal Magistrate. Until his appointment, he was an Assistant Registrar, Magistrates’ Courts, with special responsibilities for the Auctioneers Licensing Board, among other duties. He served in various stations including Garissa, Mandera, Meru and Milimani Commercial Courts.

The Constitution of Kenya, 2010, established the Industrial Court under Article 162(2) (a) as a superior court of record with the status of the High Court to exercise jurisdiction throughout Kenya. The Industrial Court Act requires the Judiciary to eventually devolve the Industrial Court to all the counties to ensure reasonable, equitable and progressive access to the judicial services.

The Court hears matters related to employment and industrial relations as well as promotes good employment and labour relations in Kenya. Since its creation with the appointment of the first 12 judges in 2012, the court has established its operations in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nyeri, Nakuru and Kisumu.
