Kenya: Following a split among CORD leaders over the recently held political rallies and push for national debate on Saba Saba Day tomorrow, it is feared key CORD Governors and MPs could miss the event.
The split has become evident that Jubilee leaders say the attendance would demonstrate division in CORD on what its three principals were pushing for. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's attendance, for instance, is in doubt.
This is because he has visibly missed out on other CORD rallies. Dr Kidero, Dr Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Hussein Daddo (Tana-River) have openly opposed the rally, warning such events would destabilise the country and disrupt business.
Common enemy
Nyamira County Senator Mongare Bwo’okongo and MPs Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache South) Manson Nyamweya (South Mugirango), Joe Mutambu (Mwingi Central), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala MP), Ben Momanyi (Borabu MP), Gedion Munga’ro (Kilifi North MP) Halima Ware (County women representative) and Abdulswamad Sharif (Mvita) are also opposed to the rally.
A section of other MPs who have not publicly disapproved of the rallies, which they too are opposed have not been militant about it. They say the rallies have only helped unite Jubilee, which has now realised it has a common enemy in CORD.
An MP from lower Eastern who did not want to be named also said the major problem in CORD was poor consultation. A section of MPs from the Coalition’s stronghold of Western and Nyanza regions have been missing on CODR's countrywide rallies as a build-up to tomorrow’s rally.
It is also believed leaders professing the Muslim faith may not turn-up due to the on-going Ramadhan for instance Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar, and Garissa County Governor Nathif Jama.
Mutua said he would be chairing his Cabinet meeting tomorrow in Machakos town to structure the work plan for the 2014/15 financial year among other projects.
“We will be working for the people of Machakos. I, however, urge Kenyans to maintain peace,” said Mutua.
