100-year-old town finally gets new roads

Chuka, Kenya: Residents of Chuka Tharaka Nithi county have a reason to smile after the tarmacking of the town roads was commissioned on Sunday.

The two former regimes had promises made for tarmacking of the 100-year-old town's roads without success.

However through the efforts of the area Senator Prof. Kithure Kindiki and Chuka Igambang'ombe MP Muthomi Njuki , the Jubilee Government has funded the project.

The colourful ceremony attracted various leaders and residents from all over the country.

The tarmacking will improve the efficiency of business and commercial activities in the county's major town.

Speaking during the commissioning, area MP Muthomi Njuki said the road will make the shopping centre, hospitals, schools and cooperatives accessible.

He asked people with houses along the road to relocate and bring them down for the road’s construction.

However the owners were asked to consult with the engineers to look at options of redesigning the buildings which are partially on the roads.

Njuki asked young people to apply for jobs in the project saying it was a good employment opportunity.

"I have asked the contactors to give job priority to area residents so young people should take advantage of the opportunity."

Governor Samuel Ragwa said it is time for the town to acquire a new look to achieve a breakthrough in developing the economy of the county.

Ragwa said physical planning was going to be done to ensure order in constructing buildings in the town.

"People should wait for planning to be done because completed buildings on the roadside will be brought down."

He said redesigning of the town and the tarmack will make Chuka Town a Commercial City in future.

The project worth 300 million is sponsored by the national government and has been awarded to Territorial Works Construction Company.
