National girls’ basketball champions Kaya Tiwi made their Brookside East Africa Secondary Schools debut in style with a resounding 94-32 conquest over Barchando also of Kenya. Not even a delay in starting play could stop the national queens from making their intentions in the competition known.

Tiwi were in a class of their own as they out-classed Barchando who they had also beaten in the semi-finals at the nationals earlier in the year. Tiwi coach Phillip Onyango said that his girls were out to reclaim the title Kenya lost to Uganda last year. “The basketball title has always been a possession of Kenya that is why we want it back. My girls have prepared well and are not ready to settle for nothing less than the title,” Onyango said.

He added that the real competition for his girls will begin when they face opponents from other countries. Tiwi went into the match as favourites taking the first quarter 12-7. Their prowess in the sport was evident as they increased their scores by ten in the second quarter taking it 22-7.

They secured the third 19-13 with Barchando increasing their score by three baskets. Tiwi were unmatched in the fourth quarter scoring 41 points while Barchando managed two and a half basket.

It was also an all-Kenyan affair in girls’ handball as St Anne’s Sega beat their Matuu Memorial counterparts 24-12.

Today, national girls’ football champions St John’s Kaloleni launch their title campaign against GS Remera of Rwanda.

Meanwhile, Tanzania, Zanzibar and South Sudan failed to make it for the games causing a slight delay in the start of the events. Tanzania withdrew most of the teams with only Alliance School representing the country in boys’ and girls’ football.
