At the beginning of this year, Alan Wadi, then a Moi University student was behind bars after being found guilty of insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta. He was released later after winning an appeal, but is back on social media agitating for better standards of living.

His friend in campus, Seth Odongo alias Dikembe Disembe was also charged with hate speech. Even though his case is still ongoing, Odongo is known for speaking his mind.

The two add to a growing list of outspoken Moi University alumni including Majority Leader of the National Assembly of Kenya Aden Duale, Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, former Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny and Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar Hassan among others.

Last week alumni stood in solidarity  complaining over the closure of Moi University’s law school. Over 20 years ago during the late Oginga Odinga’s burial in his Bondo home, it was reported that as dignitaries from the government side spoke, students from Moi University demanded to see the remains of Jaramogi and attempted to break through the security detail. But is the university producing hecklers?

Dikembe Disembe told Campus Vibe that most students have experienced firsthand a failing system which pushes most to speak out.

“We are inclined to humanity, because over the years what has happened is that the environment in the university encourages agitation, politically,” said Dikembe.

Alan Wadi thought Moi University pushed students to be bold because of the kind politics students engage in.

“Politics there is just like National politics. We are not hecklers, we are just bold enough to know how to handle it when it comes,” he said.

A political science lecturer at the institution told Campus Vibe that the scenario was akin to a toddler stepping out of the shadows.

“There is UoN, then Moi University. They are all hecklers when it comes to politics, but the latter will always try to outdo the other because they schooled here knowing they are second. It is like trying to be above your stereotype.”
