Bishops from Kenyan coast condemn same-sex unions

Bishops of three evangelical churches have cautioned the Government against homosexuality.

Mika Kenga of Light of God Evangelism Ministries, Ezekiel Kalu of Pentecostal Evangelism Ministries Alliance and Kashero Lewa of World Christian Professional Ministries said that African traditions do not allow for same sex marriages.

They said Africans should be allowed to express their opposition to the Western-led crusade in support of homosexuality the same way Western societies oppose certain third world cultures.

The bishops said US President Barack Obama's equating the demand for homosexuality to the struggle for human dignity and equal rights when he visited Kenya, was misplaced within biblical and African doctrine.

Speaking during celebrations to mark 33 years of spiritual excellence and success of the Light of God Evangelism Ministries in Kenya yesterday, the clergymen said they were impressed by President Uhuru Kenyatta's stand on the matter during Mr Obama's visit.

"As leaders of God, our hearts were touched by the sentiments made by President Obama when he visited this country when he openly said homosexuality was a human right and those engaged in such acts should be respected," said Bishop Kenga.

Bishop Kalu said America is a developed country and some of the issues being practised there under the guidance of the law are not applicable in African counties including Kenya.

"America has had more than 40 presidents meaning that country is developed and advanced in many things. There is no way we can allow what is being practiced there, like homosexuality, to be replicated here," said Kalu.

They also blamed the Internet for having played a big role in encouraging immorality among young people in the country, and urged the Government to regulate the use of modern communication systems.

Bishop Lewa said some youths, especially those in high schools, colleges and universities have been using the Internet and social media to search for lovers and practice illicit sexual acts.

He said it's sad to see Kenyan girls being torched and others killed after they travel to western counties to join lovers met through social media.
