The discipline question in universities

The 3rd August news by the Standard on the state of university discipline is something so important that has prompted me to comment about it. During our high school studies, the teachers kept on reminding us that at the campus everyone was entitled to his/her behavior. They stressed on the point that life here was enjoyable forgetting the discipline part.

I will not deny that campus students lack discipline only that the society here left us to take care of ourselves .Apart from the notice board memorandums and the first year orientations, some of us have never seen the Chancellor’s or their Vice’s leave alone having a chat with them. It’s like they welcomed us and left the police officers to tackle us in situations of misbehavior, should we blame them?

The only way to pass our messages to the administration and the government has been narrowed down to strikes though comrades are always very peaceful. Imagine having a strike like once in an academic year, isn’t that peaceful? Comrades always strike when they feel something is wrong somewhere just like medical personnel, government workers, teachers and any other personnel. So that never merits for the discipline question.

From this point I want to believe that discipline is a personal matter and one can always choose to be disciplined or not depending on one’s morals and how one was brought up. Whenever students misbehave, not all are usually suspended but just the few who are extremely stubborn depending on how one upholds himself/herself hence one brush cannot be used to paint the whole comrade fraternity with it, with all due respect I challenge the matter.

Students’ leaders should also be blamed for the behavior of those under them. In situations where they lead the rest to strike and the school takes extra action, they should be blamed for deviating from the fight of Peace. Most of the strikes are called and signed by them and in the end only common students are held responsible.
