How do I know if I'm in love with my boyfriend as things are moving very fast?

Dear Coleen

I have recently got into a relationship – one that makes me incredibly happy. In fact, it is almost too perfect.

Things have moved very fast – we first met at the beginning of March and we became boyfriend and girlfriend last week. I couldn’t be happier.

It doesn’t feel rushed, it feels so natural and right, and he’s all I’ve ever wanted from a guy.

However, last weekend he was on a night out with his friends and messaged me when he was drunk, saying he loves me.

The thing is, I’ve never been in love. I am only 21 so have no idea if the feelings I have towards him are ones of love.

I asked him in the morning, when he was sober, if he really did love me and he told me he has never felt love this strong with someone before.

I need your help – when will I know if my feelings mean I love him?

He is worried that he might have scared me off, but I can’t help but feel bad for not saying I love him back because being in a relationship like this is all I’ve ever wanted.

I’ve always dreamed of someone loving me like this. Please help.

I can’t tell you if you’re in love, that’s something you just know.

What I would say is that your relationship sounds fab, so you shouldn’t let his “I love you” scare you off.

I actually think it’s quite commendable that you didn’t just say it back out of panic because at the moment, that would clearly be lying to him.

I think as long as you’re really happy, that big L word will happen when it’s right and hit you like a bolt of lightning.

When you first get together with someone it’s more about lust and loving being in their company, and it’s incredibly exciting.

But love is something that grows to a point where you can’t imagine being without that person. Not all couples arrive at that point at the same time.

I wouldn’t stress over it right now. You’re still young and having a lovely time.

Perhaps you’re loving the relationship, but maybe not in love yet. Stop worrying and enjoy it.
