Kisumu-based rally driver Chandu upbeat ahead of Safari Rally

Kisumu-based rally driver Chandrakant Devji Chabhadia Chandu will be leaving nothing to chance during the rigorous 63rd KCB Safari Rally.

Chandu, who has been putting final touches to his Subaru GC8 told FeverPitch: "The car is already at our workshop at the Shajanand holdings go-down where our service team is making final touches on it. We are putting new shock absorbers, new clutch and breaking system, the service team is also checking the steering rack and arm bushes just to ensure everything is perfect."

"I will be having Nairobi-based Julius Mwachuya as my new navigator during the Safari Rally after Jonathan Kosgei, my former navigator, pulled out of the forthcoming race citing personal commitment," he added. Chandu who thanked all his home fans and I&M Bank Kisumu branch for their sponsorship.

"I&M Bank Kisumu has always stood by us and this time round, they are going to sponsor us during the KCB Safari Rally," added Chandu.

Mwachuya said they will do everything to ensure they register a podium finish in group S and possibly finish among the top ten best drivers.

"We have been preparing well for the rally, we hope to familiarise ourselves with the route during the recce," said Mwachuya.

He added. "We are mentally prepared for the rally and our major aim is to have a respectable podium finish in our category. God willing, we will finish in the top ten category. We hope the car will allow us do so."

Meanwhile, The 2006 Safari Rally champion Azar Anwar leads a team of six drivers into this weekend's 63rd edition of the KCB Safari Rally.

Silverspread Team-sponsored Anwar, navigated by Julius Ngugi in a Mitsubishi Evo8 car, hopes to win and beat the likes of Denis Mwenda and Job Njiru in a Mitsubishi Evo9. 

"It will be exciting to take on my long-time friend Mwenda in the Silverspread Team," said Anwar.

Mwenda, will be hoping to cast away the Kisumu Rally mishaps during the Safari this Easter weekend.
