Does Kenya Harlequin have what it takes to stop Kenya Commercial Bank from successfully defending the Impala Floodlit title?
The last time Quins won the tournament was back in 1998 and since then, they have always fielded a development side in the tournament that was not good enough to claim the title, or they snubbed the tournament all together.
This year looks different with the Ngong Road-based side having made it to the final. The defending champions KCB will definitely be favourites to win the title given that they have already beaten the hosts Impala and the reigning Kenya Cup champions Nakuru RFC, whereas Quins have played Mwamba RFC who have not been a threatening side in 15s rugby in the past five years, and their second game was against Mean Machine, who finished their Kenya Cup campaign last season in the bottom four.
Even Quins head coach Enos Otieno acknowledged to our sister publication Feverpitch that they cannot gauge their real potential until they play a team that finished in the top four in the Kenya Cup last season.
They will get a chance to know where they stand when they play KCB who finished runners-up in the Kenya Cup, playing second only to the invincible Nakuru RFC. Both Quins and KCB have claimed that they will stick to their development squads, however this may only be a tactical utterance from the coaches who seem to have fielded full-strength squads with the exception of sevens national team players who are on mandatory rest and hence would have not been available even if the coaches would have wanted to field them.
Quins however has a team that most fans would have a hard time putting names to the faces, whereas KCB has a star-studded team that comprises of former national sevens team players, in addition to current fifteens national team players.
The difference between the two teams will most likely be that Quins will bank on their teamwork to get through the champions, whereas the Bankers will be looking at key players to carry the team forward with flashes of brilliance and leadership.
Otieno sais they are expecting a difficult match on Saturday and they will be training hard throughout the week to ensure that they draw first blood in the 15s season as they look to be considered as one of the formidable sides of the Kenyan rugby.
