Lawmakers kick off audit on public funds

Murang’a, Kenya: A Parliamentary committee has launched an audit process on performance of county governments and independent commissions.

Parliamentary Committee on Budget and Appropriation Chairman Rev Mutava Musyimi said departments of the national government are also being audited to ensure proper utilisation of public funds.

"The purpose of the audit is to ensure public funds have created necessary impact in the country and help to point out any misuse," said Mr Mutava, who is also Gachoka MP.

Speaking in Murang’a, Mutava said the exercise was being conducted by a team of seven professionals drawn from various sectors of the economy and a draft report is expected next month.

He said the final report on the audit will be released in February next year. He said in April, the committee formed a team and allocated Sh80 million to conduct an audit of the performance of the national and county governments and commissions.

“We are to audit the commissions that were created by the Constitution to ensure their performance is at par with our expectations,” said the Gachoka lawmaker.

The MP called on the officers handling public funds to exercise transparency following claims of massive misuse. He also urged governors to effectively utilise the allocated funds to spearhead development programmes. Members who accompanied Musyimi included Irungu Kang’ata (Kiharu) and Clement Wambugu (Mathioya) among others.
